If you sell handbags, belts or garments in the European Union, nickel-free hardware is not a marketing buzzword — it is a legal requirement. Every year, metal accessories are recalled from the EU market because their nickel release exceeds legal limits. This guide explains what the law actually says, and how to make sure your hardware supplier keeps you compliant.
What Does REACH Say About Nickel?
Under EU REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex XVII, Entry 27, metal items that come into direct and prolonged contact with skin must not release nickel at a rate above:
- 0.5 μg/cm²/week — for items in prolonged skin contact (belt buckles, rivets, jeans buttons, strap adjusters)
- 0.2 μg/cm²/week — for items inserted into pierced body parts
Bag hardware is a gray area that brands should treat conservatively: handles, chains and clasps that touch the hand or shoulder regularly are generally expected to meet the 0.5 μg/cm²/week limit.
Why Nickel Is a Problem
Nickel allergy affects an estimated 10–15% of the European population — one of the most common contact allergies. It causes itching, redness and rashes. For a brand, a single allergic-reaction complaint can mean product recalls, retailer chargebacks, and lasting reputation damage. That is why major EU retailers now require nickel-release test reports before listing any metal-trimmed product.
How Is Nickel Release Tested?
The reference test method is EN 1811, which simulates two years of wear in an artificial sweat solution. Reputable labs (SGS, TÜV, Intertek, Bureau Veritas) can issue EN 1811 reports for each hardware style. When sourcing hardware, ask your supplier for:
- EN 1811 test reports for the exact plating finish you are ordering
- Confirmation that the base material is nickel-free (e.g., 304/316 stainless steel or low-nickel brass)
- Batch-level quality control, not just a one-time certificate
How to Source Truly Nickel-Free Hardware
Choose the right base material. Solid brass and 304/316 stainless steel contain little or no free nickel. Cheap zinc alloy hardware often relies on nickel underplating, which is where failures begin. You can learn more on our materials page.
Choose the right finish. PVD coating is inherently nickel-free and creates a dense barrier over the base metal. If you use electroplating, specify a nickel-free plating line — not every factory has one. We compared both options in our guide to PVD coating vs. electroplating.
Test every new batch or color. A gold finish and a gunmetal finish from the same factory can have different nickel release results.
The Business Case
Nickel-free compliance is also a selling point. EU and Scandinavian brands increasingly print "nickel-free" on hang tags, and US brands use it to meet California Proposition 65 expectations. Sourcing compliant hardware from the start is far cheaper than a recall.
