The difference is the surface finish. For bag and belt brands, choosing the right finish affects not just appearance but durability, cost and how the hardware ages in customers’ hands.
The Main Finishes for Brass Fittings
Polished (Mirror) Finish
The classic luxury look: brass buffed to a mirror shine, usually protected with clear lacquer, electroplating or PVD. Polished brass fittings photograph beautifully and signal quality instantly. The trade-off: fingerprints and scratches show easily, so polishing quality and the protective topcoat matter enormously.
Brushed (Satin) Finish
Fine abrasive lines give brushed brass a soft, understated sheen. It hides fingerprints and small scratches far better than mirror polish, which makes it a favorite for belt buckles and other high-contact parts. Brushed finishes pair naturally with PVD coatings in gold, gunmetal or black.
Antique (Aged) Finish
Chemical darkening followed by partial polishing leaves dark recesses and warm highlights — the "vintage" look. Because the finish is worked into the metal rather than layered on top, antique brass ages gracefully and is forgiving of wear. It suits heritage brands, denim, western and casual leather goods.
Sandblasted / Matte Finish
A uniform, non-reflective surface with a modern, technical feel. Matte brass is less common but distinctive, and works well for minimalist brands that want metal hardware without shine.
Plated & PVD Colors

Specifying Finishes When Sourcing
Finish descriptions are subjective — one factory’s "antique brass" is another’s "old gold". Avoid surprises with three habits:
- Always approve a physical reference sample, not a photo; keep a signed "golden sample" at both sides
- Specify the protective topcoat (lacquer, plating thickness, or PVD) — the base finish alone does not determine durability
- Ask for salt-spray test hours on the exact finish you are ordering; quality polished and PVD finishes should pass 48 hours or more
